Camel Riding in Egypt

Camel-back riding is a huge part of the Egyptian touristic heritage. However, it is also a huge source of animal discomfort. Against common belief, camels are really sensitive animals that do not tolerate heavy weight if not well fed and well treated.

In the summer, like every other creature, camels need a constant source of water. The humps, are not filled with water, they are filled with fat so when the camel feels tired or in need of energy, his/her  body breaks down some of its stored fat. A website called “Right Tourism” created by “Care for the Wild International” a registered UK charity has listed 5 steps every tourist should consider before riding a camel:

“Can this camel realistically take my height and weight?
Are the camels generally in good condition – with a healthy coat and positive body language (see below)?
Malnourished camels should not be worked – are the camels a good weight? Can you see access to water and food at the camels resting place?
Equipment – does all of the equipment used, such as mouth bits, saddles and harnesses look to be in good condition and well fitting?
Length of trek – how many miles is the camel expected to take you – bear in mind your weight, the terrain, access to water, and the heat. Is this a realistic journey for the animal to complete comfortably?”

YES ! the five steps have the initials of the word “CAMEL”!!

So what can you do to help?

1) Do not give money to an owner who doesn’t treat his/her camels well– that would make him/her over work the camel.

2) Select the right camel for you, do not just settle with thte camel the owner chooses for you, consider your weight, height and the camel’s health.

3) If you see the owner hitting his/her camels, tell them to stop and threaten to walk away, GIVE FEED BACK! Some owners are plain ignorant and do not know any better, try to show them the other way.

4) If all in all the camel seems unhealthy and ill, WALK AWAY!!! and report the owner and the camel to the animal welfare groups on Facebook like this one: http://www.facebook.com/groups/153683224666131/

Thank you!
