Giza Zoo

I visited the Giza Zoo on Thursday 6/7 to get an idea of the animals’ status there.

First thing I was offered when I arrived there was to pay 30 L.E. to take a picture with a little lion cub!!! This is shocking.  Lions are wild animals and feel extreme distress when they are in close contact with humans– when they experience human “stuff” like the flash of the camera or the loud cry of excitement from a little kid.

I, then, went in to see that the bears finally got to enjoy the water sprinklers that were at first turned off with the excuse that “those bears don’t like water” … well, they are black Himalayan bears , of course they LOVE water.

What I saw next will be illustrated in the following images… lots of trash and injured animals !

A little lodge for the bears to climb on

Some fresh fruit to one of the bears , but what about the others?

A dead hamster !

Too thin that his rib cage is showing.

All in all, I do believe that our zoo has potential if the significant trash problem(s) is properly handled and some of the animals are relocated to open areas or bigger cages where their natural habitat is taken into consideration. The Giza Zoo can, and should,  become a more ‘animal friendly’ place.
